It was Tom Bowen, born in 1916, in Geelong, Australia, who
pioneered The Bowen Technique. Throughout his early working
life he developed an intense interest in the different
ways in which human suffering could be alleviated through
such principals as body massage and manipulation. He spent much of his young life working with and observing
different therapists, including football trainers and other
therapists involved with sport. He trained as an osteopath,
and after years of further practice, including observation
and clinical research he developed what has come to be known
as The Bowen Technique.
He had initially begun by treating friends and colleagues
after work – with dramatic results! The word quickly
spread and hundreds of people began flocking to Tom Bowen
for treatment. By the time he was in his early 40’s,
this gifted man had opened his own clinic and established
a full-time practice in remedial therapy using the technique
he had spent his life developing.
In 1975, the government of Victoria, in Australia, held
a study into complementary health care professionals. The
study, which was assessed over a 27-week period, documented
Tom Bowen as seeing a staggering 13,000 patients a year,
88% of whom achieved substantial relief after three or four
treatments, seven days apart. His practise grew rapidly and
he ran a successful clinic for over 30 years.
In 1974, he was introduced to Oswald Rentsh, an Osteopath
and Natural Therapist. Subsequently, Rentsh, and his wife
Elaine, spent the next two and a half years studying with
Bowen, ultimately being authorised by Bowen to document his
work. After this long apprenticeship, the two began utilising
Bowen’s method at their clinic in Hamilton, Victoria,
Australia.
Tom Bowen was a quiet and humble man who dedicated his whole
life to relieving the pain of others. He continued to develop
and refine his technique right up to his death in 1982. Since
then, Oswald and Elaine introduced the teaching of The Bowen
Technique throughout Australia, New Zealand, South Africa,
America and Europe.
